Presentation

Dr. Wagner Campos Otoni  is an agronomist and received his doctorate degree in 1994 in Plant Breeding from the Federal University of Viçosa, Brazil, in a sandwish category with a two years-period (1992 and 1993) at Nottingham University, and a posdoctoral training at University of California – Berkeley (2010). He is currently a Full  Professor of Plant Anatomy at the Plant Biology Department.  Dr. Otoni  is the author or co-author of more than 130 research articles and 23 book chapters, most of which deal with the aspects of plant cell, tissue and organ culture of various species.  He serves as Associate Editor of In Vitro Cellular and Developmental Biology-Plant and Theoretical and Experimental Plant Physiology. He is currently a consulting member of the Scientific Agencies from the Brazilian Government.  He served as the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Botany from 2001 to 2009.

Research interest

Plant cell, tissue and organ culture/in vitro morphogenesis

Current projects include
  • Morpho-histological and molecular characterisation of morphogenic events during in vitro regenerative processes;
  • Establishment of mass propagation protocols in bioreactors and regeneration protocols to support genetic transformation studies;
  • Establishment of photoautotrophic tissue culture propagation methods and environmental control;
  • Regulation of carotenoid biosynthetic genes in citrus (Citrus sp.) and annatto (Bixa orellana);
  • Manipulation of secondary metabolite routes in medicinal plants, with an emphasis on phytoecdysteroid biosynthesis in Brazilian ginseng (Pfaffia sp.).
